Allstate Agent Cale Schorer recently visited G. Ray Bodley High School to present them with the groundbreaking CRASH! The Science of Collisions program. Allstate Agent Jerry Pleskach recently visited Pulaski High School to present them with the same program.
The educational program developed by Scientific Social Solutions (S³) uses automobile crashes as a basis for teaching physics, physical science, biology, math and driver’s education topics to high school students. The Allstate Foundation offered the program to Long Island high schools in Nassau and Suffolk Counties as part of its annual “Safe Teen Drive LI†initiative.
Designed in 2002 by Professor John Kwasnoski, one of the country’s leading experts on motor vehicle crash reconstruction and founder of S³, the CRASH! program directly engages students in the learning process through real-world problem solving. Students use actual police reports from traffic accidents to solve a mystery using mathematics and science. Students gain a genuine understanding of the implications and consequences of speed, inattention, and alcohol; an understanding that has been demonstrated to modify their behind-the-wheel behavior.
High schools that receive the CRASH! program are encouraged to apply the curriculum in creative ways. The most creative and relevant activities will be chosen by Professor Kwasnoski and The Allstate Foundation to be featured at a “Safe Teen Drive LI†event with New York State and Long Island lawmakers, traffic safety officials and law enforcement officials.
