VOLNEY – It’s all fun and games at Volney Elementary School as its fifth graders prepare for the upcoming New York State math exam.
In their Response to Intervention math groups, based on their academic needs, students wrote main objectives, game objectives, math problem sets, answer keys and a list of game pieces needed to play handmade board games such as “Battle of the Birds” and “That One Silly Math Game,” among several others.
Questions ranged from easy, medium and hard to help students work through and master either order of operation or multi-step problems for each game.
Teacher Deborah Arden said each fifth grade RTI group will evaluate all games and provide feedback, such as the need for clarity of directions and adjusted math answers.
A sample problem for one of the games was 20×10(40-28)-30 = ?.
The fifth graders have until early May to play the games before the state test is offered.
