Gastroenterologist Bishnu Sapkota to Speak About Good Colorectal Health

OSWEGO, NY – Oswego Health Gastroenterologist Bishnu Sapkota will discuss good colorectal health during an Ask The Doctor presentation to be held at 6 p.m. March 26 in the lower level conference room of the Oswego Health Services Center, which is adjacent to Oswego Hospital.

During his presentation, Dr. Sapkota will take the fear out of one of the most important screenings those 50 and older should undergo: a colonoscopy.

“I want to raise awareness of the importance of having a colonoscopy,” said Dr. Sapkota. “As it has been shown to decrease the incidence of colon cancer and decrease mortality.”

He will also discuss what individuals should expect before and after a colonoscopy.

Colorectal cancer is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, according to the American Society of Gastroenterology Endoscopy, of which Dr. Sapkota is a member.

Annually, approximately 140,000 new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in the United States and 50,000 people die from the disease.

It has been estimated that increased awareness and screening would save at least 30,000 lives each year.

At the presentation, free colorectal kits will be available to those that attend that can be self-administered in the privacy of the individuals’ home and then sent to one of Oswego Health’s lab location for analysis.

Dr. Sapkota attended Manipal College of Medical Sciences in Nepal, where he was nominated by the Government of Nepal’s Ministry of Education to receive a full scholarship while he earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery.

During medical school, he was recognized for being the best in basic and clinical sciences, as well as for being the most outgoing medical student.

Following medical school, Dr. Sapkota came to the United States to complete his training, where he continued to be recognized for his skills and enthusiasm for the field of medicine.

Dr. Sapkota said that by having trained as both an internist and gastroenterologist, he was able to combine a medical and surgical practice.

“I like the art of practicing medicine, and also being able to meet the gastroenterology needs of my patients,” he said.

Dr. Sapkota is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology and the American College of Physicians.

In 2011, Dr. Sapkota joined the medical practice of Ajoy Roy, MD, whose office is located in suite 400 of the Seneca Hill Health Services Center.
