On Friday, November 11, 2011 several families got together to celebrate Veterans Day and the historical palindrome date of 11-11-11. Each family attending were asked to bring eleven items to be donated to the Veterans Hospital in Syracuse, NY.
“The purpose of this gathering was to celebrate a once in a lifetime occurrence (11-11-11), while paying tribute to our Veterans,” Betsy Sherman-Saunders commented, hostess of the gathering.
According to the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, World War I, which at the time was known as “The Great War”, officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France.
However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when a temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (11-11-11).
For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”
The items will be delivered to the Veterans Hospital in Syracuse, NY on Saturday, November 19, 2011.
