Cicero, N.Y. – The Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways, Inc. is participating in Forever Green, a nation-wide effort of girls leading their families, schools, and communities in improving the environment and protecting natural resources.
Nationally, Girl Scouts Forever Green invites girls and the community to take action on three projects: Reduce Plastic Waste, Earth Hour, and Rain Gardens.
The Girl Scouts Forever Green 100th Anniversary Take Action Project was created after Girl Scouts research found that an overwhelming number of girls said protecting the environment is a top priority.
Area Girl Scouts chose reducing plastic waste as the project they wanted to focus on this year. During April girls will take the Girl Scouts Forever Green pledge at www.girlscouts.org/gsforevergreen and keep track of how many times they refill their water bottles and reuse their reusable bags.
The community is invited to join the Girl Scouts and also take the online pledge.
Participants will then log their totals on the Forever Green website to monitor how much they have helped reduce the carbon footprint.
The Forever Green project will culminate in Earth Day activities taking place at several properties: Camp Hoover in Tully on April 22; the Yaiewano Program Center in Auburn on April 22; and Camp Trefoil in Harrisville on May 6.
At these events girls will explore ways they can reduce the footprint on the earth and take part in activities while coming up with ideas to do in their own communities.
At Yaiewano girls will also begin construction on a Rain Garden and possibly begin planting, depending on rain conditions.
The community can get involved at three Parties in the Park to help clean up area parks.
They will be on April 22 in Rome, from 1-4 p.m. Check-in at Franklin Field Park; on April 29 in Cayuga County also from 1-4 p.m. at various parks and trails, and to be determined in Watertown. The Parties in the Park is funded in part by a grant from the Alcoa Foundation.
The foundation is providing a two-year $1.5 million grant to expand the Girl Scouts Forever Green project globally to 20 countries in partnership with the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts.
As part of the project, Girl Scouts of NYPENN Pathways will be “twinned” with another global organization to work on Forever Green projects.
