Golf Classic To Raise Funds For AURORA

Jim Rosecrans, vice-president of marketing for Empire Vision Centers, believes in putting his money where his mouth is. Empire Vision Centers will be the major sponsor of the 12th Annual ForeSIGHT Golf Classic Sept. 8 at Foxfire in Baldwinsville.

The tournament, which is being held to raise awareness of the needs of people with visual impairments, will benefit AURORA of Central New York, Inc.

AURORA offers low-vision services, rehabilitation, training, education, employment and social support to people who have visual impairments. For more than 90 years, the agency has been serving people in Central New York who are blind, deaf, visually impaired and hard of hearing.

“There’s a natural connection between AURORA’s work and Empire’s,” Rosecrans said. “We started as a secondary sponsor and, when others dropped out, we decided to step in as major sponsor. We’re in vision care; we should be a forerunner, and what better way to do that than helping AURORA raise funds.”

Empire served as major sponsor at last year’s ForeSIGHT tournament, the first year that the proceeds went to AURORA. The 2007 tournament raised $15,000. “We had a great first year and we’re looking forward to another successful turnout,” said Anne Costa, AURORA’s director of resource and community development.

Outback Steakhouse is co-sponsoring the tournament.

As part of the tournament’s goal of raising awareness, golfers will have an opportunity to get an idea of what it is like to be blind. They will be offered a chance to take a swing at a golf ball while wearing low-vision simulation glasses. They will be looking through the haze of cataracts, the blind spots of retinopathy, or – as many older Americans are discovering – the deteriorating central vision of macular degeneration.

Organizers are signing up golfers and collecting donations of merchandise and services to use as prizes. For more information, call AURORA at 422-7263 or log on to
