Granby House Fire Claims Life

GRANBY – At 6:04 p.m. today (Dec. 9) members of the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office responded to 36 Chase Road in the town of Granby for a reported structure fire.

A single-family residence was in flames upon arrival.

It was reported to be occupied by one individual.

Fire personnel recovered one person from the burning structure promptly upon arrival and he was pronounced dead upon recovery.

No other victims were discovered.

The decedent and sole occupant was identified as 71-year-old Peter Valkenburg of 36 Chase Road.

His cause of death remains under investigation.

The fire was suppressed by members of Granby Fire with assistance from Cody Fire, Volney Fire, Hannibal Fire, Oswego Fire, Minetto Fire, Phoenix Fire, Fulton City Fire and Mexico Fire.

Menter Ambulance transported one fireman to Oswego  Hospital for evaluation for a injury that occurred during recovery efforts.

His injuries are reportedly not to be life-threatening.

The Oswego County Fire Coordinator’s Office is assisting with determining the origin and cause of the fire which remains under investigation at this time.
