Half-Shire Historical Society News – December 5, 2014

On Sunday, November 30, the snow subsided and melted some and the roads were bare in Redfield, allowing for more than 250 people to gather at the Redfield Fire Hall to memorialize Ron Bumpus who left this world on October 23.

The event was presided over by Ron’s lifetime friend, John Stedman, who masterfully organized the speakers.

Among those that shared thoughts on Ron were: Frank Hilliker, Randy Yerdon, Jack Plumley, Dan Christmas, Fran Yerdon, Dan Bumpus, Laird Petrie and Bruce Mellon.

Stedman read a reading that was sent in by Michael Lambie.

Liberty Bumpus thanked everyone on behalf of the family.

The profusion of photos tastefully framed and arranged around the room was stunning.

One person said they never knew there were so many photos of Ronny … his life in the woods, canoeing across the Adirondacks, on his snowmobiles or bikes, and with his family was captured brilliantly.

The Redfield Ladies Auxiliary upheld its well-known tradition of hospitality with an amazing buffet that could have fed the town.

Ron’s was one of the most difficult obituaries to write in the current Half-Shire newsletter that should be in most mailboxes as you read this.

We offered a link to the obituary that appears on the LaRobardiere website that was beautifully done by the family.

Our newsletter is late as seems to be our trend this year.

This will be changed as Sharon Turo is now taking over the editing and will hold this writer more to task in articles.

2015 dues are now being accepted and can be returned in the envelope included in the mailing.

On Sunday December 7, Half-Shire will co-host a cookie cut out and decorating session at the Pulaski Masonic Temple on Broad Street in Pulaski.

The event coincides with “Light up Pulaski” and will be held from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

We will have some photos and projects on display from the society.

All are welcome and the event is free.

On Thanksgiving, we received a phone call that our great friend, Doris Brown Allen, had passed away in Rochester, age 93.

Doris was last at our dance on November 15 and suffered from debilitating pain and diabetes.

Despite this, Doris got up and moved to the music, dancing with Barb Joslyn through several songs.

Doris led an incredible life and we will write more about her in this space next week.
