Half-Shire Historical Society News – Week of November 30, 2012

The society held its last meeting of the year on November 24.

A good number attended the fine lunch served by Erma Schroeder.

The meeting was conducted by Greg Monette in the absence of President Doyle.

A speaker came to discuss insurance options for the building.

A large Christmas tree graced the front of the stage, courtesy of Trust Nursery in Pulaski.

We will try to keep research hours up on Fridays and Saturdays, weather dependent.

On Sunday the 25th, we had our first big snow of the season; it took many by surprise after last year’s non-winter.

On our facebook page we have posted some photos from the Geer-Wansink collection that was loaned to us by Ellen Wansink Lowery.

A school photo from the 1930s has been a topic of discussion to get all the names right.

It seems to have been taken in the south district of Richland near Frank Lacy Road.

Photos of Frank and Sherman Lacy, who the roads were named for, are also featured.

We are trying to get caught up on our scanning that has fallen behind.

Sharon Turo leads this effort with a detailed program that is easily accessed and cross-referenced.

All of our computer work came to a screeching halt the week before last when our power supply died on the main computer and the laptop had a virus.

We are indebted to Jon Goodsell for saving us on both counts, and getting things back in order!

The end of the year newsletter is coming together and we hope to have it out in the next couple weeks.

Membership dues will be graciously accepted for 2013.

We will again be able to keep our regular dues at $12, $25 for supporting and $250 for life memberships.

In 2012, we topped 500 paid memberships, thanks in part to the aggressive fund drive to install the handicapped lift and new flooring.

We hope to retain and expand that number in 2013.

A schedule for meetings and events for 2013 will also be on the last page of the newsletter.
