Hannibal Board Discusses Contracts In Special Closed-Door Meeting Tonight

The Hannibal Central School Board of Education will hold a special meeting at 6:30 p.m. on tonight in the High School Board Room. The only item will be an executive session to discuss the district’s contracts with its unions.  Executive sessions are closed to the public.

Superintendent Mike DiFabio explains, “The board is working to understand the current language in the contracts to prepare for contracts that will be (nearing their expiration).”

The cost of staff is the district’s highest expense, and one of the few large expenses over which it has some control.

School districts are working on budgets for the next school year, with the statewide school budget voting day just a few months away.

Districts are facing sharply higher costs for their contributions to the state worker retirement funds at a time when overall state aid is either not increasing or is decreasing.

At the same time, state requirements and state demands for annual improvement in test scores have made it difficult for schools to identify teaching areas to cut.
