HANNIBAL, NY – Student instrumentalists from 21 school districts in Central New York gathered in the Setnor Auditorium on the Syracuse University campus on October 5 to present an exhilarating program of music written for concert band.
The Greater Syracuse Honors Youth Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band performed music by contemporary composers Robert W. Smith, Frank Ticheli, Samuel Hazo and Richard Saucedo, representing a variety of styles and moods.
Participating from Hannibal High School were Blake Farnham on alto saxophone, Amanda Miano on clarinet and Vanessa Waldron on flute, all students of Shirley Terrinoni.
The Honors Youth Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band provide a unique opportunity for the most outstanding wind and percussion students from Central New York high schools to rehearse and perform together.
Students are selected by nomination of their high school band director and are among the finest musicians from their respective schools.
Dr. Bradley P. Ethington, director of the SU Setnor School of Music and Professor Justin Mertz rehearse and conduct the Greater Syracuse Honors Youth Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band on four Sunday afternoons in September and October, culminating in an outstanding final concert performance.
