HANNIBAL, NY – As a way to make the transition from middle school to high school a bit smoother, the Hannibal Central School District launched a summer program that recently culminated in a living history museum.
Eight incoming freshmen participated in the Summer Institute, an intensive two-week program that focused on building skills in the four primary subject areas: math, science, English and social studies.
Through hands-on activities and meetings with local historians, the students learned about Hannibal’s history and presented their research findings.
“The program was designed to build on the skills needed to be successful in high school, while at the same time bringing back Hannibal pride,” said John Snow, the response to intervention coordinator for the HSCD. “Hannibal has a rich heritage, and the students were able to see that through their research.”
To aid in the learning process, teachers Dave Meeker, Michael Cook, Krystal Ward and Justin Enright coordinated interviews with area historians and created different projects that incorporated local history into the four core subjects.
“It was an educational program,” said student participant Jessica Miner. “Since I’m from here, then I should know about where I come from. I learned a lot about commerce and industry.”
Miner and her classmates showcased their knowledge to teachers, board of education representatives, community members, school administrators and family members as part of a living history museum Aug. 7.
Attendees viewed the projects, asked questions and said they were impressed by the students’ work.
“You are dedicated to your studies, your education and your Hannibal community,” Superintendent Donna Fountain told the students. “I am so proud of you for your hard work and commitment.”
