Harborfest Again Named To Top 100 Event List

Oswego, NY – For the fifth time, Oswego Harborfest has been chosen one of the Top 100 Events in North America for group travel in 2010, the American Bus Association announced recently. A panel of ABA-member bus and tour operators selects their Top 100 list from hundreds of entries nominated by state/provincial tourism offices and local and regional convention and visitor’s bureaus.

“This is such an honor not only for the Harborfest staff, directors, and volunteers, but it’s also a feather in the cap for our community,” said Tom Van Schaack, Executive Director of Oswego Harbor Festivals, Inc. “With the economic climate we’re facing, we are fortunate that Harborfest has continued to receive the support from sponsors and members that allows us to continue to put on such a wonderful event.”

Oswego Harborfest was also honored with a Top 100 listing in 1996, 1998, 2005 and 2008. ABA represents approximately 1,000 motorcoach and tour companies in the United States and Canada. Its members operate charter, tour, regular route, airport express, special operations and contract services (commuter, school, transit). Another 2,800 member organizations represent the travel and tourism industry and suppliers of bus products and services who work in partnership with the North American motorcoach industry.

According to studies recently completed by researchers at The George Washington University and Dunham and Associates, one overnight visit by a motorcoach group can leave from $5000 to more than $13,000 in a local destinations economy.

“The attractiveness of Harborfest as a don’t-miss entertainment value is only part of why it’s selection this year is such a distinction for Harborfest,” said Peter J. Pantuso, CTIS, ABA’s President and CEO. “The real news here is that Harborfest has been recognized as a potential magnet for tourism dollars, at a time when reenergizing domestic tourism is so important to our spirit and our economy.”

The entire Top 100 list is published in a special supplement to “Destinations”, ABA’s award winning magazine and posted on ABA’s web site, www.buses.org, from September 2009 through December 2010. Harborfest 2010 is set for July 22-25.
