Hazel A. Ebert

OSWEGO, NY – Hazel A. Ebert, wife of the late Robert J. Ebert passed away in California on Friday February 14, 2014.

A third generation native Oswegonian, she was born in Oswego, where she lived most of her life.

She was the daughter of William John and Anna Rose McMahon McGrath.

She attended schools in both Oswego and Fulton and graduated from Oswego High School.

She married Robert Ebert on August 28. 1939, and was the mother of six children, of whom two survive; R. John (Jack) (Cheryl) Ebert of Johnson City, NY, and Thomas J. Ebert of Clovis, Calif.

She worked with her husband in his automobile business until his retirement in 1976, most notably, his Buick Opel GMC dealership located in the Jordan Building at East Sixth and Bridge streets.

After her husband’s death in 1980, she continued to maintain the family properties.

In 1986, she was recognized by the Oswego County Historical Society for her preservation work on the Jordan building.

She was a member of several local organizations, most notably the Mother’s Club.

She enjoyed playing bridge and participated in the game as often as she could.

She was most recently a communicant of St. Charles Boromeo Catholic Church in California.

In addition to her sons, she is survived by her ten grandchildren; one step-grandchild; 12 great-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.

She is also survived by two sisters, Anamae (Richard) Mitchell and Eileen (George) Ranous both of Oswego; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Patricia Ann Ebert (Jay) Dann of Allentown, Pa.; and sons, William J. (Bill) (Paula) Ebert of Rancho Mirage Calif., Frederick (Ted) J. (Geordie) Ebert of Visalia, Calif., and David J. (Sam Gunter) Ebert of Highlands, N.C.; and a great-grandson, Jacob Theodore Dann of San Jose, Calif.

She was also predeceased by her brothers, John W. (Catherine) McGrath and George R. (Mary) McGrath; and a sister, Helen M. (Robert) Benzing, all of Oswego.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday March 1 at 10 from Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church in Minetto.

Entombment will be in All Saints’ Mausoleum.

Friends may call at Dowdle Funeral Home on Friday February 28 from 4-7 p.m.
