Pastor Chuck Forbes and music director Mary Lou Carpenter-Bjorkman announced plans for Holy Week services at the Minetto United Methodist Church.
The Palm Sunday worship service at 10 a.m. on April 13, will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion.
The pastor’s message will be, “Beneath the Cross.” There will be a children’s message followed by a Sunday school class for the children. Coffee hour refreshments will follow the service.
Maundy Thursday of Holy Week, April 17, will be marked with a service of Tenebrae at 5:30 p.m. This will be a contemporary interpretation of the Last Supper. After the service, there will be a reservation-only dinner at 6:30 p.m.
Reservations are due by April 13, and may be made by contacting Pastor Forbes at 343-3465.
Diners will be asked to contribute a specific food item for the dinner. Lamb and chicken will be provided.
The Good Friday service on April 18, will be at 7 p.m. with the Chancel Choir.
Pastor Forbes noted that throughout Lent, “we have traveled with Jesus on his journey to Jerusalem seeking hope amid some of life’s most difficult challenges. Now we are at the pinnacle of our journey – the intersection of suffering and hope. When we face the cross, we may find ourselves reflected in it. What have we done to add to the suffering of the world? What have we done to add to our own personal suffering? While this service is somber, a sense of hope must not be lost. Christ’s act created a bridge for humanity to cross into eternal hope!”
A prayer vigil will be kept beginning at sundown on April 19, and continuing until Easter Sunday morning.
Participants are invited to call 343-3465 to reserve a time. The prayer vigil is a time of quiet – the candles on the altar will be the only light in the sanctuary – it will be a time for prayer.
Sample prayers will be available.
The Resurrection of Jesus Christ will be celebrated on Easter Sunday, at 10 a.m. on April 20.
The service will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion. The Chancel Choir will perform, Testimony of Life, a cantata written by the popular sacred composer Joseph Martin.
According to music director Carpenter-Bjorkman, “it was written in a traditional style and inspired by the ‘lessons and carols’ format. This unique work presents the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. It includes newly composed choral anthems, scripture, and congregational hymns.”
During the singing of one of the final songs, the congregation will be invited to adorn our traditional living cross with fresh cut flowers brought from home or available at the church.
It will later be displayed on the church lawn for the enjoyment of those passing by.
The church is located at the corner of State Route 48 and County Route 8 in the village of Minetto.
The building is fully handicapped accessible and nursery care is available for infants.
