It’s Been Warmer Than Average For More Than A Year

OSWEGO, NY – Last month was a little warmer than usual. The previous month was the warmest ever.

That got Bill Gregway, local observer for the National Weather Service, thinking – “How warm has it been?”

“April was 1.1 degrees warmer than average. March was the warmest ever (46.7 degrees) and that got me thinking,” he said. “I went back and looked; we have been on a warm streak for more than a year.”

Every month has been warmer than average back until March 2011 when it was 0.4-degree cooler than average.

“April to April is quite a streak. Thirteen months in a row is quite interesting,” Gregway observed.

The average temperature for January 2011 was 22.7 degrees (0.9-degree below average); for February 2011 it was 25.5 degrees (0.1-degree above average), Gregway noted.

“March 2011 came in at 33.5 degrees (0.4-degree below average). And then, our streak started,” he said. “Every month, April to April so far, has been at least 1.1 degrees warmer than normal.”

April 2011 – 47.0 degrees (2.3 degrees above average)

May 2011 – 58.7 degrees (2.7 degrees above average)

June 2011 – 67.3 degrees (2.0 degrees above average)

July 2011 – 74.0 degrees (3.2 degrees above average)

August 2011 – 71.0 degrees (1.6 degrees above average)

September 2011 – 65.6 degrees (3.6 degrees above average)

October 2011 – 52.3 degrees (1.2 degrees above average)

November 2011 – 47.0 degrees (7.0 degrees above average and 3rd warmest overall)

December 2011 – 35.1 degrees (5.4 degrees above average)

January 2012 – 30.5 degrees (6.9 degrees above average)

February 2012 – 32.2 degrees (6.8 degrees above average)

March 2012 – 46.7 degrees (12.8 degrees above average – the warmest on record)

April 2012 – 45.8 degrees (1.1 degrees above average)

The warmest May is 1998 at 62.6 degrees. Right behind is 1880 with 62.2 degrees.
