Jack McClelland, 90, died peacefully on Monday, May 23, 2011, after a ten year battle with dementia. He was with his family, and under the loving care of the staff at Sunrise Nursing Home.

Jack was born on June 21, 1920, in Oswego, to Hugh and Catherine (Cooper) McClelland. He was a lifetime resident and attended local schools.

He was very athletic, and for many years participated in local bowling and softball leagues. He was a member of the Oswego Softball Hall of Fame.

He was a member of the National Guard Co. D 108th Infantry.

Jack retired in 1984 after 42 years as a proud welder with Cyclotherm Package Boiler in Oswego. He spent his retirement years traveling to shrines around the world, and making thousands of rosary beads that he loved giving to family, old friends, and new friends. He was a faithful communicant of St. Mary’s Church where he went every Monday, for 60 years, to “light my candles”.

Jack was predeceased by his loving wife, Agnes E. (Holden) McClelland in 1984; and infant son, Jackie; a brother, William “Mac” McClelland; and a sister, Rita McClelland Slifko Von Holtz.

Jack was quiet, strong, kind, and always willing to lend a helping hand. His spirit will live forever and remain with his family.

He is survived by 2 daughters, Judy (John) Nagelschmidt of Fulton, and Jill (Dave) McDonough of Harrisburg, PA; a brother, Bob (Nancy) McClelland of Mexico, NY; a sister, Ann (Dick) Smith of North Syracuse; 4 grandchildren, Paul (Bonnie) McDonough, Heidi (Pete Ufholz) Nagelschmidt, John Nagelschmidt, and Scott (Tonya) McDonough; and six much loved great-grandchildren, Tanner, Mitchell, Megan, Emily, Paul Jacob, and Jack. He is also survived by ten nephews; nine nieces; and many lifelong friends and neighbors.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30am Friday, in St. Mary’s Church.

Burial will be in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

Calling hours will be held from 4:00 to 7:00pm Thursday, at the Dain-Cullinan Funeral Home, 112 East Second Street in Oswego.
