James N. Ridgeway, 72 of Volney, died Sunday at home following a sudden illness.
He was a graduate of Phoenix High School and S.U.N.Y. at Oswego where he received his bachelor’s degree in education and master’s degree in English. He later went on to receive his Certificate of Advanced Studies from Syracuse University. Jim taught English for 42 years at West Genesee Junior High School in Camillus and had served as president and vice president of the West Genesee Teachers Association for 32 years.
He had served as chairman of the Town of Volney Republican Committee; a Town of Volney Board member; tax collector and elections inspector. He also served on the Oswego County Solid Waste Management Board and the Westar Credit Union Board of Directors.
Jim was a volunteer driver for the Oswego County Chapter of the American Cancer Society and a volunteer carpenter for the Oswego County Animal Welfare League (S.P.C.A.). He was an active member of Hiram Lodge 144 F.&A.M.; B.P.O.E. Lodge 830 and Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge 1280 all in Fulton.
Jim was predeceased by his parents, Charles and Mildred Ridgeway and his sister, Marion Ridgeway. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Angel Caltabiano Ridgeway of Volney; a son, Dr. Kevin (Dr. Jennifer) Ridgeway of Cicero; a daughter, Karen Ridgeway of Volney; a grandson, Jared Ridgeway of Cicero and several cousins.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at St. Stephens Church, 469 Main Street, Phoenix. Calling hours are 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Foster Funeral Home, 910 Fay Street, Fulton with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.
