Jimmy Phelps Puts His Troyer In Victory Lane Friday Night At Brewerton Speedway

By Dave Medler
BREWERTON, NY – Jimmy Phelps out of Baldwinsville, NY is a man on a mission in the 2012 season. Phelps wants to regain the Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Track Championship that he won in the 2010 season.

Friday night at the Brewerton Speedway, Phelps charged from the sixteenth starting spot to take the lead from Larry Wight on lap 23, and from there put his J&B Installations, No.99j, Troyer in victory lane in the exciting 35 lap feature.

Other winners on Ferris Mowers, One Small Step For Prader-Willi Syndrome Night were, Jerry Lobdell Jr., Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Joe Garafolo, Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Zak Petrie, Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Joe August Jr. and Dan Vauter led the 28 car starting field down to the green flag, with August grabbing the lead on the opening lap of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature.

As the first lap was completed, Alan Johnson slowed on the back straight as his car saw the drive shaft break ending his night.

With 5 laps complete, August built up a few car length advantage over Larry Wight, with Ryan Bartlett, Vauter and Tim O’Brien right in the battle.

On lap 8, using the cushion, Wight was able to blast by August to be scored the new leader.

By lap 10, Wight was able to start putting distance between him and August, as Bartlett, O’Brien and Jimmy Phelps showed in the top-five.

On lap 15, Wight started reeling in back markers with August running alone in second. Phelps, Bartlett and O’Brien fought for third through fifth.

With 20 laps showing on the lap counter, Wight, Phelps and August ran nose to tail, as they not only battled for the lead, but tried getting through slower cars putting them a lap down.

With Wight running the top-side in the lead, Phelps was able to bottle-up the leader behind a car, then diving to the bottom to be scored the new leader on lap 22.

With 10 laps to go, Phelps was able to start putting cars between him and the rest of the top-five and looked to be heading to the easy win till a caution with two-laps to go.

When the green came back out, Phelps was not to be denied as he outran Matt Sheppard to the checkers. Ryan Bartlett, Joe August Jr. and Ryan Phelps finished third through fifth.

“We had that long green run and I didn’t even know who was leading,” said Jimmy Phelps from SUNY Canton Victory Lane.” Larry (Wight) looked like he was going pretty well so I figured he was the leader. Fortunately he got pinned up there on the top with a lapped car; we were able to sneak underneath him. What an excellent racecar we had tonight.”

“I got to thank all my guys for all their hard work, Doug Holmes and his guys at Finger lakes Machine and everybody at Troyer.”

In the Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, JJ Courcy grabbed the lead on lap 3 and was on rails leading the till lap 13 when Chris Fleming was able to use a back marker as a pick to be scored the new leader on lap 14. A restart with two to go showed Fleming breaking losing the lead and the win. Jerry Lobdell Jr. took advantage putting his No. 77 in victory lane. Ryan Scott, Kevan Cook, Rob Keller and Becca Eastman chased the winner across the line.

Gary Jeffries led the opening 5 laps of the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite Feature till Mike Mullen took over the top spot on lap 6. While Mullen was out front, Joe Garafolo was working his way forward running down and passing Mullen on lap 12. Once in the lead Garafolo was the first under the checkers. Mullen, Sterling Miller, Gary Jeffries and Nick Graziano finished second through fifth.

Zak Petrie took the lead on the wild opening lap of the 15 lap Anchor Bar & Grill Four Cylinder Super Stock Feature. Once in the lead Petrie out ran Tim Dunn, Wendall Washington, Chad Dupra and Richard Leahey to the win.
