OSWEGO, NY – Mr. John Charles “Jack” Comerford Sr., 93, a resident of Oswego, passed away on Friday September 25, 2015, at Oswego Hospital surrounded by his family.
Born in Oswego, he was the son of the late Joseph and Carrie (Clark) Comerford.
He attended St. John’s School and was a graduate of Oswego High School, Class of 1940, where his nickname was “Cowboy.”
Mr. Comerford was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps serving during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He married the love of his life and OHS classmate, Gloria Niger in May of 1947 at St. Joseph’s Church.
Mr. and Mrs. Comerford owned and operated JR Comerford and Son, a roofing and heating business for many years before retiring in 1983.
They proudly served many Oswego families.
Jack was an avid New York Mets fan and enjoyed a great 2015 season as the Mets rose to first place!
He served on St. John’s Church Council and was a member of the Oswego County Board of Health for many years.
Jack and Gloria enjoyed many wonderful years at their cottage in Henderson Harbor, NY.
Surviving are his children, John (Ann) Comerford of Oswego, Patricia (Ernest) Mears of Oswego, Marcia Benwitz of Rochester.
“Papa Jack” was also the proud grandfather to 10 wonderful grandchildren, Jenifer (Billy) Baswell, Kelly (Brian) Greene, Katie (Rick) Fish, Jackie Comerford, Lindsay Benwitz, Megan Benwitz, Heather Williams, Ashley (Ben) Mears-Ocean, Morgan Mears, Jonathon Mears; 11 cherished great-grandchildren; and many loved nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Gloria; two sisters, Norine Tripp and Elizabeth Legg; two brothers, Joseph Comerford Jr. and James (Diney) Comerford; daughter-in-law, Peggy Skripnik Comerford; three nephews, Richard Legg, Jamie Comerford and Timothy Comerford.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 10 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Church.
Entombment will be in All Saints’ Mausoleum.
Friends may call at the Dowdle Funeral Home on Monday from 3-7 p.m.
