Joseph J. Holland, 80, of Van Buren St. Oswego, passed away May 29, 2011.
Born in Oswego, March 19, 1931 the son of James and Marie Holland, both of Oswego.
He was married to Alma Joyce also of Oswego for 55 years.
They had two children, Marie (Ron) Schadt and Sean (Robin Russo) Holland, both of Town of Oswego, two beloved grandchildren, Amanda Schadt and Danielle Holland.
He was predeceased by his brother, James (Fran) Holland.
He served 4 years in the Navy aboard the USS Lake Champlain in the Korean Conflict from 1951-1955.
A Bricklayer by trade he became the Business Agent for the Local #54 from 1964 to 1989. A 60-year member of the union.
He served on the Port Authority for over a decade. He was a Trustee for the International Masonry Institute and was instrumental in its organization. Serving as an advisor from 1978-1989. He had the distinct honor of hearing Dr. Jonas Salk speak.
He attended building trade seminars at Yale, Harvard and the University of Chicago.
His family and friends adored him. His wife called Joe her gentle giant. His high school yearbook quote summed him up well. “Full of fun and fancy free that’s the way Joe will always be.”
Funeral Services will be held 10a.m. Thursday at the Nelson funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery.
Calling hours will be held 4-7p.m. Wednesday, at the Funeral Home, 11 West Albany St. Oswego.
