HANNIBAL, NY – Joseph A. “Pug” Mitchell, 87, of Martville, died Wednesday June 13, 2012, of a broken heart due to the passing of his wife of 65 years at Morningstar Residential Health Center in Oswego.
He was born in Oswego and resided in Martville since 1970.
Joe graduated from Oswego High School and enlisted in the U.S. Army at the age of 17 to fight in World War II where he received the Purple Heart and Bronze Star medals.
He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force where he served in Korea and Vietnam until his retirement in 1969.
Joe then worked at Alcan until his retirement in 1985.
During his retirement, Joe enjoyed playing cards and spending time outdoors.
Dad’s final years where greatly enhanced by his poker buddies at the Elks Lodge in Oswego.
Joe was predeceased by his wife of 65 years, Jean M. Mitchell, who died May 4, 2012; two brothers, William and Harold Mitchell; and a sister Wanda Gorman.
He is survived by six children, Timothy (Gail) Mitchell of Paducah, Kentucky, Gail (Walter) Lehmann of Hannibal, Jacqueline (Charles) Giancola of Manlius, Lynn McCormick of San Antonio, Texas, Matthew (Terri) Mitchell of Martville and Kathleen (Jeffrey) O’Brien of Fair Haven; a sister, Alma (Joseph) Castaldo of Oswego; 18 grandchildren; and several great grandchildren.
Calling hours will be held 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday with services to follow at Martville United Methodist Church, 13729 Martville Road, Martville.
Burial will be in Martville Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Mr. Mitchell may be made to the Martville United Methodist Church, c/o Donald Hess, treasurer, 13609 Ira Station Road, Martville, NY 13111.
