Katherine L. Beers, 92

OSWEGO, NY – Katherine L. Beers, 92, a resident of Oswego, passed away Saturday May 26, 2012, at St. Luke Health Facilities.

Born in Braintree, Mass., she was the daughter of the late F. Richard and Lucella (Taylor) Bolster.

She started school in a two-room school in Weston Vermont, moved to Meriden, Conn., in second grade.

She graduated in 1938 from Bristol, Conn., High School as valedictorian.

She graduated from Tufts University with a BA, Summa Cum Laude; Phi Beta Kappa in 1942.

Involved from early childhood in painting, drawing, crafts and music.

She played piano and violin.

She played violin in orchestra in junior high, high school and Tufts University – where she met husband (Theodore H. Beers) who was playing percussion.

They married in 1943.

In high school, she was a member of the National Honor Society and chorus both in high school and college.

She and Ted moved to Oswego in 1949 when her husband took a position at SUNY Oswego to organize an audio visual education department.

She worked at Oswego Hospital as a secretary in the Pathologist Department, retiring in 1985.

She was active in with the Faculty Wives Club at SUNY Oswego and with the Campus School PTA. She served as secretary of the Oswego YMCA from 1960-1966.

Her enjoyments were playing piano, violin, badminton, croquet, ping-pong, canasta and bridge and word games.

She and her husband made wooden Christmas decorations and their own family Christmas cards.

She spoke French and Latin.

She enjoyed watching Jeopardy and Wheel of Fortune.

She loved apple pie and ice cream – she always had room for her dessert.

Surviving are her children, Greg (Liz) Beers of Lunenburg, Ma., Sandra (David) Wall of Castleton, Vermont, Bradford (Margaret) Beers of Oswego and Rev. Bruce (Stephanie) Beers of Montevideo, Uruguay; 11 grandchildren, Karen (Mark) Augusta, Jeff (Tracey) Beers, Katie Beers, Teresa Wall, Kimberly Wall, Benjamin Wall, Ted (Darcy) Beers, Kristi (Taylor) McDade, Sara (Travis Thompson) Beers, Bryan Beers and Elizabeth Beers; and 15 great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Theodore H. Beers in 1998.

Calling hours will be held 4-7 p.m. Thursday, with a service to follow, at the Nelson Funeral Home, 11 W. Albany St., Oswego.

Burial will held in the Groton Cemetery, Groton, Mass.
