About half of the fifth and sixth grade classes at the Dennis Kenney Middle School were recognized by their teachers and Principal Dee Froio for academic achievements, perfect attendance and other accolades.
After teachers handed awards out to students in class, recipients were treated to a reception in the school cafeteria where breakfast-pizza, juice, milk and applesauce were served.
Four students were also randomly selected to receive prizes.
Frio challenged each honoree to encourage classmates to improve their academic, participation and attendance performances so more students may return for the second quarter celebration.
“She’s right, we should bring a friend next time,” one fifth grader said as he walked back to class.
More than 100 seventh and eighth grade students also were honored in a separate assembly, after having achieved similar standards throughout the first quarter.
Frio said students who didn’t receive an award may work harder to increase their grades by five points in order to be recognized next quarter.
