Incoming kindergarteners at Fairley Elementary recently had the opportunity to tour the building and eat ice-cream with their classmates, all before school started.
The Kindergarten Ice-cream Social is an annual event held at the elementary school.
It is spearheaded by the Hannibal Home & School, Inc. who fund, organize, and make invitations for the evening.
This year Hannibal welcomes 105 new kindergarten students into the district.
Twenty-five to 30 percent of the incoming kindergarteners are new to the district; either just moved or had not attended pre-k at the school.
During the event, kindergarteners met their teachers, were given name tags and shown their cubbyholes.
They also had the chance to travel through the lunchroom line while getting their ice-cream, and sat in the cafeteria to enjoy their treat.
“It’s a big day that first day of kindergarten,” said Principal Mr. Musa.
He said the gathering alleviates some stress, and is a time for kids to connect and build friendships.
