Kush Among Herons Honored by League

Four members of the William Smith College basketball team were honored by the Liberty League office today. Senior guard Mollie Danahy (Troy/Troy, N.Y.), junior forward Kristen Kush (G. Ray Bodley/Fulton, N.Y.), and sophomore guard Sydni Salvatore (Walpole/Walpole, Mass.) were named to the Team of the Week, while first-year guard Jacqueline Murphy (Holy Names/Slingerlands, N.Y.) was tabbed the Rookie of the Week.

The quartet turned in a strong effort at No. 20 Medaille on Dec. 30. Their play kept the Herons in striking distance until the final buzzer sounded on a 79-72 win by the Mavericks.

Danahy scored 17 points on 8-of-14 shooting, grabbed five boards, doled out five assists, and recorded a game-high four steals. A starter in all 10 games this season, she leads William Smith in assists (3.0 apg) and steals (2.9 spg) and is second in scoring (11.4 ppg). Danahy leads the Liberty League in steals and ranks sixth in assists, ninth in 3-pointers made (1.5/g), 11th in 3-point shooting (.326), and 13th in scoring.

Kush scored a team-high 20 points on 10-of-16 shooting and collected five caroms. Also a starter in all 10 games, she leads William Smith in scoring (16.7 ppg) and is second in rebounding (7.1 rpg). Kush is third in the conference in scoring, sixth in rebounding, and seventh in field goal percentage (.474).

Salvatore scored 13 points, including an 8-for-8 effort at the free throw line, and grabbed five rebounds. A starter in seven of 10 games this season, she is second on the team in assists (2.2) and steals (1.8) and third in scoring (8.3). Salvatore is eighth in the league in steals, 15th in free throw shooting (.705), and 23rd in scoring.

Murphy corralled a game-high 11 rebounds and made two assists and two steals. A starter in eight of 10 games this year, she leads the Liberty League in rebounding (9.8 rpg).

The Herons (4-6) will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 4, when they host Potsdam (1-7). Tipoff in Bristol Gym is scheduled for 5 p.m. WHWS-FM (105.7) will broadcast the game.
