Lacona man struck and killed by train while riding snowmobile on train tracks

Lacona, NY – On 1/19/14 at approximately 11:09 p.m., the New York State Police in Pulaski responded to a report of a Freight Train vs. Snowmobile collision in the village of Lacona.

The investigation revealed that the victim, Bernard C. Joss, 04/10/58, of Lacona, was riding his 2002 Polaris 700 snowmobile on the train tracks when his sled apparently became stuck on the rails.

Joss was attempting to free his sled when he and the sled were struck by a southbound CSX freight train.

He was observed by the train conductor from an extended distance, troopers said.

The emergency brake was applied and air horn was sounded for an extended period of time, according to the report.

Despite the oncoming train, Joss reportedly continued to attempt to free his sled from the tracks before being struck.

Joss was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The collision occurred between the Harwood Drive and Miller Road rail crossings.

State Police were assisted at the scene by the Oswego Co. Sheriff’s Office, CSX Railroad Police, and the Lacona Fire Department.

The investigation is continuing by CSX authorities and the New York State Police.
