Laker Baseball Sweeps Twinbill Over SUNYIT

OSWEGO, N.Y. – Using a big rally in game one and a late run in game two, the Oswego State baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep of SUNYIT at Laker Baseball Field on Saturday.

The Lakers (5-8) scored six runs in the third inning of game one en route to a 7-3 win, helping Jon Stevens (Jr., Chittenango, N.Y.) improve to 3-0 this season. In game two, the Lakers scored a run in the sixth for a 3-2 victory in game two.

Oswego State slipped out to a 1-0 lead in game one when John Rauseo (Fr., Mattituck, N.Y.) singled to center, stole second and then scored on a single by Brian Hamilton (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.).

SUNYIT (1-14) avoided further damage in the inning with a line drive out and a deep fly ball to center with the bases loaded.

However, in the third inning, the Lakers made SUNYIT pay for hitting two batters with pitches and committing two errors by scoring six runs in the frame.

Matt Miller (Jr., Montoursville, Pa.) and Alex Jurczynski (Jr., Schenectady, N.Y.) were both hit by pitches to open the inning. Ed Charles (Jr., Auburn, N.Y.) followed by laying down a bunt, but the ball was thrown into right field, allowing Miller to score.

Rauseo drove in Jurczynski with a single to right center before another error brought in two more runs and upped the lead to 5-0.

Tyler Baker (So., Hannibal, N.Y.) continued the rally with a single to left that scored Hamilton and then Mike Stark (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to center.

SUNYIT added a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh, but never threatened to take the lead.

Stevens allowed his first earned run of the season in the fifth, his 26th inning of work this season. Stevens finished with four strikeouts and three walks in five innings, while Jon Silva (Jr., Mexico, N.Y.) walked one and gave up two earned runs in two innings on the mound.

David Mazzullo (Sr, Rochester, N.Y.), Miller and Rauseo all went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the offense in game one.

Game two featured three very quick innings to start the game before the Lakers broke through with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the fourth.

Mazzullo walked with one out and moved to second on a single by Miller before Charles broke the scoreless tie with a single into right field. That was followed by an error that allowed Miller to score and increase the lead to 2-0.

The Wildcats finally got to Laker starter Brady Farkas (Sr., Clifton Park, N.Y.) with a two-out double and a single in the fifth inning, and then tied the game thanks to a double and a wild pitch in the sixth inning.

Miller quickly broke the tie when he doubled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning and then scored on a pair of passed balls by the Wildcat catcher.

Mark Schaper (Sr., Warwick, N.Y.) entered to pitch the seventh for the Lakers. After giving up a one-out walk, Schaper struck out the next two batters to earn the save.

Farkas earned his first win of the season with fourth strikeouts and no walks in six innings, while Miller was the only Laker with two hits in the game.

Oswego State is back in action on Sunday with a trip to Ithaca.
