OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State field hockey team (2-8) got back into the win column at home when it put together a great team effort to defeated the Wells Express (4-7), 4-2, on Wednesday afternoon.
The Lakers came out with a chip on their shoulder engaging in great ball control for much of the first half. Senior Alyssa Hare (Middleport, N Y.) took charge when captain Jess Felice (Sr., Endicott, N.Y.) sent a ball towards the left post to Hare, who was ready for the tap in goal, and a much needed 1-0 lead.
No more than five minutes later, Ashley Collins (Jr., Whitney Point, N.Y.) took a shot from the top of the circle after a great set up from Courtney Collins (So., Fairport, N.Y.) to create some distance from the Express before the ten-minute mark.
In the 38th minute, Ashley Fiorille (Jr., Pittsford, N.Y.) extended Oswego State’s lead to three goals on a scramble in front of the Wells goalie.
Wells battled back in the second half, though, as a long shot from Marina Fargnoli snuck in right behind Grace Lombardi (Fr., Ossining, N.Y.) before the Laker defender could clear the ball. The Express then took advantage of an Oswego State green card to cut the lead to 3-2 with the extra attacker.
However, the Collins connection worked together again, when Courtney Collins sent a pass over to Ashley Collins for the fourth and final goal of the game following a penalty corner as time expired, making the score, 4-2.
The Lakers look to stay in the win column when they travel to SUNYAC rival Cortland on Friday.
