OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State volleyball team (3-4) erased a 5-0 deficit in the fifth set to pull out a 3-2 win (12-25, 25-17, 28-26, 13-25, 15-12) against St. John Fisher (1-5) in front of a loud home crowd Tuesday night. On a night where the Cardinals won nearly every statistical category, the Lakers served aggressively resulting in 15 aces to go along with 13 St. John Fisher serving errors.
The Cardinals raced out of the gates firing on all cylinders, as they won the first set, 25-12.
Both squads went back and forth early in the second set until 15-all when service error by St. John Fisher triggered a 10-2 Oswego State run that saw eight Cardinal errors to even the match at one set apiece.
The Lakers gained a four-point advantage at 16-12 in the third set behind three service aces by Chelsea Crump (Sr., Sandy Creek, N.Y.). However, St. John Fisher erased the deficit behind three Oswego State hitting miscues. The rest of the set was seesaw battle until the Lakers were able to capitalize on a pair of attack errors to take the pivotal frame, 28-26.
In the fourth set, the Cardinals made lineup adjustments that resulted in the offense hitting .323, while Oswego State hit a sparse .054. St. John Fisher forced a decisive fifth set when the Lakers served a ball deep out of bounds.
Erin Crandall started the Cardinals out with a 5-0 lead before kill by Stephanie Bailey (So., Scotia, N.Y.) ended the streak. Oswego State countered with four straight points, including two Emily Walser (Fr., Baldwinsville, N.Y.) service aces. St. John Fisher later established a 9-5 advantage until a Morgan Lavner (Jr., Oswego, N.Y.) kill gave the Lakers the ball back as Storey Nowaczyk (Fr., Amherst, N.Y.) stepped behind the service line. Her aggressive serving caused problems for the Cardinal serve receive, as she recorded an ace and contributed to three straight hitting errors to give Oswego State a 12-9 lead. The visitors pulled to within two points, but Crump sealed the victory with one of her 11 kills.
Crump, who finished the match hitting .409, added six service aces and one block assist. Kara Michelsen (So., Lake View, N.Y.) distributed 28 assists and tallied 11 digs, while Kelsey Ihle (Sr., Clarence Center, N.Y.) dug up a team-high 21 balls. Stephanie Bailey added nine kills, while Sabrina Sutton (Jr., Fulton, N.Y.), Meaghan Puff (Jr., Newfane, N.Y.) recorded 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
St. John Fisher was paced by Rachael Kline, who posted 11 kills and nine blocks, followed by 13 kills from Megan Miller. Erin Crandall led the defensive effort with 24 digs, while Erica Stickler handed out 37 assists.
The Lakers take part in the Hawk Invitational hosted by New Paltz on Friday and Saturday.
