WINTER HAVEN Fla. – The Oswego State baseball team (3-8) struggled with runners in scoring position on Saturday, falling to Clarkson 6-1 and 9-1 to close out their Spring Break trip in Florida.
Clarkson (3-1) scored four runs in the bottom of the second inning in game one before the Lakers scored their lone run in the top of the third.
Mike Stark (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) singled with two outs before David Mazzullo (Sr., Rochester, N.Y.) singled to center. Mazzullo’s hit was misplayed in the outfield, allowing Stark to come all the way around to score.
The Lakers left a total of five runners on base in the game, but a two-run rally in the bottom of the sixth sealed the 6-1 win for Clarkson.
Dan Erne (Jr., Rochester, N.Y.) took the loss for the Lakers with two strikeouts, one walk and four earned runs in five and two-thirds innings of work. No Laker had more than one hit in game one.
In game two, Clarkson scored a pair of runs in the top of the second and then pounded out five hits and took advantage of two Laker errors to score seven in the fifth inning to pull away for the 9-1 victory.
Oswego State’s lone run came in the seventh inning when Mazzullo hit a one-out single and scored on a two-out base hit by Brian Hamilton (Fr., Liverpool, N.Y.).
The Lakers had six hits in the game and left 12 runners on base during the contest. Mazzullo drew a pair of walks to go along with his single to lead the offense.
Kyle Miller (Jr., Miller Place, N.Y.) took the loss with five strikeouts in four and one-third innings on the mound. Sheldon Paura (Fr., West Monroe, N.Y.) struck out two, while working a perfect seventh inning.
The Lakers’ home opener is schedule for Saturday, March 24 against SUNYIT at 1 and 4 p.m.
