CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – Oswego State senior wrestler Blake Fisher (Seaford, N.Y.) won his first match at 157 pounds during the first day of the 2013 NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships on Friday, but came up short in his final two matches to bow out of the national tournament.
Fisher started the championships by defeating Dubuque’s Ryan Warczynksi, 3-1, in his opening round. The bout was scoreless heading into the second period when Fisher chose bottom. He registered an escape with less than a minute left in the stanza to take a 1-0 lead. Warczynksi selected bottom to start the third, and tied the match with an escape. As time dwindled, Fisher notched a takedown with 45 seconds remaining in regulation, and held on for the 3-1 victory.
In his second match of the day, Fisher faced fourth-seeded Kristopher Krawchuk of Wilkes, who entered the match with a record of 24-2. Fisher came up short in the end, losing by the score of 13-4 in a major decision to move into the wrestleback bracket where he faced Cortland’s Troy Sterling. Sterling defeated Fisher in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship match, 3-2, two weeks ago.
However, Sterling got the better of Fisher by the score of 9-6 to force Fisher out of the tournament. Fisher wraps up the season at 21-11 overall.
