Cortland, NY – The State University of New York Athletic Conference has bestowed Player of the Week honors on Mike Montagna of the men’s ice hockey team while naming teammate Matt Zawadzki its Rookie of the Week for the week ending January 5.
In a 2-0 week for the Lakers, which included winning their second-straight PathFinder Bank/Oswego State Hockey Classic championship, Montagna and Zawadzki played key roles in the tournament.
Montagna was named the PathFinder Bank/Oswego State Hockey Classic Most Valuable Player for his effort in retaining the championship for the Lakers. In the championship game against Utica, Montagna buried the first goal during a shootout to determine the champion. He also had an assist in regulation. During the opening game against Curry, Montagna notched his third goal of the season.
Montagna was already honored on Monday by being named one of the College’s Athletes of the Week in honor of accomplishments during the classic.
Zawadzki was most impressive in the shootout against Utica to help capture the championship for Oswego. The freshman turned away the Pioneers’ first and third attempts in the shootout on his way to being named to the All-Tournament Team. He also had 25 savings in the outing to keep Oswego’s chances at the championship alive.
All of this came on the heels of Zawadzki’s second shutout of the season, a 3-0 win with 15 saves over Curry in the opening round.
The team will not have much time to celebrate its championship as Oswego returns to the ice at 7 p.m. on Tuesday as Connecticut College comes to the Campus Center.
