FULTON – What do you get when you combine 16 teams of students who have read 10 chapter books each and scores that reached up to 120 points?
One fantastic Battle of the Books at Lanigan Elementary School.
The annual event offered two competitions: one for Level 1 (grades three and four) and another for Level 2 (grades five and six).
A large crowd of students, staff members and supporters of each participant gathered in the cafeteria to cheer and applaud teams who achieved correct answers as they wrote a key word from the book title and author name, and stated the book’s full title and author name.
Eight points were awarded for that, while only five points were awarded for the correct title.
All teams in each Level competition were asked questions, beginning with “In which book…” before a detail was provided.
The Level 1 team “Red Raider Readers,” comprised of third graders Andrew Becker, Rowan Backenstross and Alexandria Wilcox obtained 120 points, after getting 15 out of 16 questions correct.
The team was coached by Alicia Burrows. Level 2 second place winners were fourth graders Angus McClave, Colby Weaver and Maxwell Scipione, who achieved 112 points at “The Mavericks.” They were coached by Tracy Waldron.
Both teams have moved on to the Fulton City School District Battle of the Books, as did “The Paper Pulverizers” sixth grade members: Ethan Clark, Skyy Smith and Clarissa Fake.
They achieved 64 points, while “T.V.S. Book Club” participants Sarah Patrick, Timothy Piano and Vivian Hotaling achieved 56 points and earned a second place finish.
