Lanigan Elementary School kindergartners recently visited Little Apple Stables, home to Sunshine Horses, a rescue group of horses which mostly were retired racers.
During the visit, the students were able to see how their service project has impacted the livelihood of the animals.
Throughout the past month, the kindergartners have learned all about horses, how they are cared for and why it was important to help Sunshine Horses.
Kindergarten teacher Dianne Sestak has volunteered at the organization and thought the rescue work paired perfectly with some of the academic lessons learned throughout the entire grade level.
The children practiced their reading and math skills, listened to stories about horses and decided to adopt some of the Sunshine horses.
After each class voted, Strawberry the donkey and the horse Mystery were the chosen adoptees.
Collectively, the youngsters raised nearly $500.
