Lanigan’s Café Book Club holds first in a series of book discussions

Fifth grade students at Lanigan Elementary School recently participated in a new group aimed at including parents into the new common cores standards and curriculum for the grade, the Lanigan Café Book Club.

The students will be reading one novel each quarter for a total of four, parents can read one or all four if they choose.

After reading the first book, “A Picture of Freedom, The Diary of Clotee, a Slave Girl” from the Dear America Series, the students and their family members met to discuss the book, eat snacks and have fun.

“We want students to love reading and become lifelong readers,” said Krista LaDue, fifth grade teacher and one of the organizers of the book club. “What better way to accomplish this task than through reading, discussing and spending time with their parents?”
