Lauren P. Stanard, 84, of Volney died Tuesday, January 4, 2011 at Oswego Hospital with his family by his side.

A native of Otselic Center, he was the son of Ivan and Ethel Stanard and the brother of Carl, Earl, Gordon, Vernon and Dewitt Stanard. Lauren was a U. S. Army veteran during World War II, serving in the Philippines and Japan. He married Elsie Eccleston on April 28, 1945 and they have remained together for over 65 years.

After the war, Lauren worked for the Dairy Herd Improvement Association (DHIA) as the Oswego County Southern Tier Milk Tester which lasted ten years. During those years he also sold silos and farm equipment. He served the town of Volney for 34 years as Tax Collector, Councilman, Supervisor and Planning Board Chairman. Lauren was a Past President of the Volney Volunteer Fire Corporation and was a member of V.F.W. Post #569, Homer Russell Smith American Legion Post #587 and charter member of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1280.

Lauren ran a successful State Farm Insurance Agency in Fulton from 1957 until his retirement in 1992. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and travelling. Lauren along with Elsie spent their winters in Florida from 1992 until 2006.

Surviving are his wife, Elsie of Volney and their children Jerry (Barbara) Stanard, Trudy Winfield, Garry (Connie) Stanard and Lauren (Michelle) Stanard all of Volney; six grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews and close friends. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, January 8, 2011at First United Church of Fulton, 33 South Third Street, Fulton. Funeral services are immediately following at 12 noon with Rev. David Nethercott officiating. Burial will be in the spring at Mt. Adnah Cemetery, Fulton. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mooseheart Child City & School, Inc., 240 James J. Davis Drive, Mooseheart, IL 60539. Foster Funeral Home, Fulton has charge of arrangements.

  1. Lauren was a good friend, and I was blessed to be able to work for him. I learned so much from him during my time at State Farm. I was just thinking of him a few days ago. I’m glad I got to see him last year when I was in NY. Chuck and I will miss him. Our condolences to Elsie and all the family.
