Mayor Michaels Salutes Fulton’s Veteran Of The Year Mike Miller

Mayor Deana Michaels, left, recently offered her personal congratulations to Mike Miller as Fulton’s 2022 Veteran of the Year.

FULTON – Mayor Deana Michaels recently offered her personal congratulations to Mike Miller as Fulton’s 2022 Veteran of the Year.

“Mike Miller is the latest in a line of outstanding Fulton veterans who are examples of exemplary service to our country and the honor they bring to entire community,” Michaels said. “I applaud Mike’s selection by the Fulton Veterans Council as this year’s Veteran of the Year.”

Miller, a Lance Cpl. In the U.S. Marine Corps, served between 2000 and 2004, as a communications technician. That service included assignments in the middle east and the Pacific.

“I was stationed with the 3rdMarine Division in Okinawa on 9/11,” Miller said. “It was absolutely heartbreaking to be so far away from home when this terrible event occurred. But it galvanized the commitment to service for every one of us stationed there.”

Miller stressed how humbling this experience has been for him.

“I’m following in the footsteps of so many great veterans who were huge in this community,” Miller said. “It’s extremely humbling to be in the company of leaders like Father Moritz Fuchs and James Weinhold.”

Miller has served as the Fulton Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 569 Commander for nearly nine years. He joined the post as a life member in 2012 and immediately began serving as its  junior vice commander. He is also a member of the Hannibal American Legion, and he is a contractor at Constellation Nuclear in Oswego where he has worked for 11 years.

During his tenure as post commander, he has focused on reaching out to the youth in the Fulton community and to younger veterans.

“One of our jobs is to give back to our community as a whole, as well as veterans,” Miller said. “We want the youth here to know just how many veterans there are in our city, and we want younger veterans to join us in that service.”

Miller said his post was a Fulton Pop Warner Football sponsor this year, and in the past, they have supported Fulton Little League baseball, and sponsored race cars at Fulton Speedway.

“People these days, especially those with young families, are busier than ever, but it is possible to enjoy comradeship and service with us, while still maintaining a balance with family,” Miller said. “I look forward to my year as Veteran of the Year in Fulton, and will use that position to further promote our mission of service.”

The Fulton Veterans Council will present Miller as the 2022 Veteran of the Year during Fulton Veterans events on Friday, Nov. 11.

The Veterans Day ceremony starts at 11 a.m. that day at Veterans Park, across from the Fulton Municipal Building, S. First St. The event is followed by a complimentary luncheon at the Fulton Polish Home where Miller and his family will be recognized.
