Lent Begins in the Diocese of Syracuse March 1 – Ash Wednesday

SYRACUSE, NY – As Catholics all over the world prepare for the beginning of Lent on Ash Wednesday, Most Reverend Robert J. Cunningham, Bishop of Syracuse, invites faithful in the seven-county Diocese of Syracuse to join him at the diocesan Mother Church to mark the beginning of the Lenten observance.

Bishop will begin the Lenten journey by celebrating the 12:10 p.m. Mass on March 1 at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception – Syracuse.

All are encouraged to attend.

Additional Mass schedules at parishes throughout the diocese are available by visiting our website.

The diocesan theme for Lent 2017 is Pray, Fast, Give.

Throughout the forty-day season, faithful can find inspiration, suggestions for reflection, and more by interacting with a Lenten calendar, available on our website, and on our Facebook page.

Ongoing coverage of Lent will be available in The Catholic Sun and on the Syracuse Catholic Television YouTube channel.

New for Lent 2017 is a special Lenten contest, presented by the diocese and The Catholic Sun.

Parishioners will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite fried fish and fixings on The Catholic Sun website.

The fish fry with the most votes will receive a highly coveted trophy and bragging rights for the next year!

Finally, Bishop Cunningham issued a St. Patrick’s Day dispensation for faithful in the diocese wishing to participate in St. Patrick’s Day celebrations.
