Local Couple Seek Votes To Sing National Anthem At NYS Fair

FULTON – Oswego County natives and long-time National Anthem singers Chuck and Betsy Copps are in the running to take their star-spangled duet to the New York State Fair this year.

“We have entered the New York State Fair’s ‘Star Spangled Challenge’ contest,” Chuck said.

Winners will be selected to sing or play the National Anthem live on one of the Fair’s 12 days, August 27 through September 7.

Each finalist will receive four admission tickets and one parking pass for the 2015 New York State Fair.

Winners will also receive a voucher good for purchases at the fair’s food stands.

“To get there, we need votes,” Betsy said. “We are asking our community to go to the Facebook page for the contest and vote for us. You can vote as often as once per hour, but any votes cast will be very much appreciated!”

The fair website and challenge link do not specify a deadline by which to cast votes, but “we know all good things must come to an end, so we recommend getting your votes in sooner than later,” Betsy said.

“This would be an exciting opportunity for us, as we have typically sung at regional sporting events,” Chuck said. “It would be a real privilege for us to represent our native Fulton and Oswego at the fair!”

Each winner will perform the National Anthem twice on one day of the fair. Winners will be notified of the date of their performance prior to the opening of the fair.

Chuck and Betsy have been presenting the Star Spangled Banner at community and sports events since the fall of 2001.

Venues have included: Fulton Kiwanis Baseball, Fulton Respect Week, Oswego Speedway, Syracuse Crunch Hockey, Syracuse Chiefs Baseball and Syracuse Silver Knights Soccer.

Chuck, who works at Le Moyne College, also sings the anthem at some of the college’s sporting events.
