PULASKI – Early-risers can grab a paddle, explore a Lake Ontario tributary and glimpse a variety of wildlife as the sun rises behind them during a sunrise kayak tour at Selkirk Shores State Park this summer.
Richard Walberger, owner of River Run Kayaks, offers guided introductory kayak tours at Selkirk Shores on Friday, Saturday and Sunday mornings.
No experience is necessary.
Rentals are available for $40 per person, or paddlers can bring their own kayak or canoe and join the group for $20 per person.
Walberger leads paddlers through the estuary of Grindstone Creek where it empties into Lake Ontario near the fishing pier at Selkirk.
Early-risers see “a ton of wildlife, just before sunrise and ending on the lake as the sun climbs over the shoreline,” said Walberger.
Walberger also rents kayaks weekends at Sandy Island Beach State Park.
He offers sunset paddling tours on Lake Ontario at Selkirk and Sandy Island Beach, weather permitting, on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.
Gordon Betts, park manager of Selkirk Shores and Sandy Island Beach, said the agency is working with Walberger on a trial basis this summer to offer kayak lessons and tours.
Paddling opportunities are heavily dependent on the weather, but Betts said the arrangement is working well so far.
All trips must be reserved in advance by calling Walberger at 315-593-9895 or emailing [email protected]
Walberger has been operating River Run Kayak out of Phoenix for about five years.
