‘Lucky 13’ Bowl-A-Fun Focuses on Needs of Homeless

FULTON, NY – Bowlers, fans, friends and family members and all fun-loving fund raiser followers are invited to the “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun on April 13, at Lakeview Lanes.

This is the 12th annual fund-raising bowling tournament hosted by Oswego County Opportunities.

Diane Cooper-Currier (center), executive director of Oswego County Opportunities, receives a $1,000 “Building Dreams” sponsorship Empower Federal Credit Union, one of the major sponsors of last year’s bowling tournament fund raiser. The check was presented by Empower Fulton branch managers Shannon Mills (left) and Lisa Bradshaw.

“This year’s proceeds will benefit services for the homeless, now and in the future,” OCO Executive Director Diane Cooper-Currier stated. “Homelessness is a problem throughout Oswego County, and it impacts consumers of every service we provide.”

Homelessness is not always visible, Cooper-Currier added.

“In Oswego County, people who are homeless often move from one friend to another, and sometimes we see people living under the bridge or trying to find shelter from the elements at covered entrances. It is especially challenging for teenagers and families, because they have very few options for stable shelter,” she said.

OCO and other organizations in Oswego County are working to change that, and that’s why the Bowl-A-fun proceeds will be used to fight homelessness.

“Did you know? Just $10 feeds a homeless person for one day,” Cooper-Currier said. “$200 feeds a homeless person for a month and $375 can feed an entire family for that same time period. Just $75 helps secure emergency housing for one night for a homeless family in crisis.”

This year’s event was dubbed the “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun because it is taking place on 4-13-13.

“Thirteen is usually associated with superstition and bad luck, but we’re turning that around and making it a lucky day, with many chances to win raffles, door prizes, silent auction items, and more!”  Cooper-Currier said.

The “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun takes place from noon – 6 p.m.

Registration is under way for five-person teams, with choice of flights: noon – 2:30 p.m. or 3 – 5:30 p.m. (first come, first served).

Businesses and individuals are invited to donate door prizes for the raffles and silent auction, and major sponsors are being solicited as well.

“If you can’t participate in our activities on April 13, you can still help,” Cooper-Currier said. “We are accepting pledges from the community towards the event, and we are also selling raffle tickets at $5 each or 3 for $13. We have three great prizes: More than  $400 worth of camping gear, a getaway for two to Vernon Downs Casino, and a dinner cruise for two on Skaneateles Lake or the Erie Canal. Call 598-4717 to get tickets.”

In addition to support for existing services, OCO will set aside a percentage of the “Lucky 13” Bowl-A-Fun proceeds to build financial resources for the future.

“There is a vision for a homeless shelter in Oswego County,” Cooper-Currier said. “As the community action agency for Oswego County, we strongly support this vision because it aligns perfectly with OCO’s mission.”

For registration or sponsor information, or to donate a door prize, contact OCO at 598-4717 or visit the agency’s website at www.oco.org
