OSWEGO, NY – Get out your Scrabble dictionary, memorize those new words, and practice your spelling. It’s time for one of the hottest games in town, the eighth annual Diane Falise Memorial Scrabble Fest, a fund raiser for Literacy Volunteers.
“Now is the time to register your four-person team and join us for an evening of fun,” said Literacy Volunteers coordinator Meg Henderson. “Last year, 26 teams enjoyed Scrabble Fest and it looks like even more will be playing this year as spots are filling fast.”
To be held September 19, at the Elks Lodge, 132 W. Fifth St., the fest pits teams of four competing against each other in four 20-minute rounds. Team scores will then be tallied and prizes will be awarded for the first, second, and third place teams.
New to this year’s event is the introduction of the ‘Golden Tile.’
In recognition of Literacy Volunteers’ 50th anniversary, teams will be able to purchase a limited number of ‘Golden Tiles’ that will play as a blank tile and can be used for the letter of their choice during each round of play.
In addition to the Scrabble competition, the fundraiser also includes a silent auction, a NYS Lottery ticket package, 50 / 50 drawing and prize drawings for a chance to win a set of four Disney Park Hopper Passes good at any Disney World Theme Park, and other great prizes.
“Whether you’re a participant or just looking for a fun night out with family and friends, Scrabble Fest will be a great night for a great cause!” Henderson said.
Doors open at 5:30 p.m., with games beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m.
Entry fee is $100 per team and includes light refreshments.
Community members looking to join the fun but not compete are welcome. The cost for spectators is $15 and includes light refreshments.
A cash bar will also be available during the event.
All proceeds from Scrabble Fest will benefit Literacy Volunteers.
“We invite community members to enter a team or just stop down to be part of the excitement of Scrabble Fest. It’s a great way to support your community and Literacy Volunteers,” Henderson said.
