Matt Sheppard Comes From Last To Win Big Block Modified Feature At The Brewerton Speedway; Test And Tune Tuesday June 21 Canceled

By Dave Medler

FULTON, NY – Matt Sheppard started 24th Friday Night at the Brewerton Speedway and methodically worked his way forward moving to 2nd with 10 laps to go in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature. Once in the runner-up spot he set his sights on leader Stewart Friesen as the pair waged a tough battle till Sheppard worked his way by on lap 31 then drove away for the exciting win.

With his victory Sheppard made it eight winners in eight feature events at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon”.

Other winners on Tracey Road Equipment night were, Rob Keller and Chris Fleming Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Jeff Isabell Sr. Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites, Stephen Denton Metalico Four-Cylinder Super Stocks and Ben Kysor Pizza Logs 600 Sprint Tour.

Peter Britten out raced the 24 car starting field to lead the opening 5 laps of the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified Feature before Larry Wight using the cushion blasted by Britten on lap 6 to take the top-spot.

With 10 laps in the books, Wight and Britten still fought for the lead, while Stewart Friesen moved from 13th to 3rd with Chad Phelps and Ted Lamb running in the top-five.

Wight was still cruising out front on lap 16 as Friesen moved to 2nd and started to chase the leader down, Britten, Lamb and Matt Sheppard from 24th showed on the scoring tower just before the halfway point.

On lap 20 Wight was running consistent laps running the bottom in turns one and two, and the top in three and four. Friesen cut Wight’s lead down to five-car lengths just before a yellow one lap later. On the restart Friesen found the bite and forward drive he needed as he drove around Wight on lap 22 to take command of the race.

While Friesen was looking to run away and hide from the field, Sheppard moved into 2nd with 10 laps to go setting up a shootout to the finish with Friesen.

Friesen and Sheppard waged a war over the next few laps with neither gaining as clear advantage till lap 30. Going into turn one Sheppard was able to drive his Xtreme Lubricants, No.9s, Bicknell under Friesen entering turn one and exiting turn two to be scored the leader on lap 32.

Over the next 3 laps Sheppard was able to open some distance over Friesen to be the first under the checkers for the big win. Friesen, Wight, Willy Decker and Jimmy Phelps rounded out the top-five. Pat Ward, Peter Britten, Alan Johnson, Tim McCreadie and Ryan Phelps completed the top-ten.

“Wow, to be in victory lane after starting dead-last” said a stunned and happy Matt Sheppard holding the checkered flag.” I’ve won a lot of races in my career but this is probably the tops. When you can start 24th at Brewerton with the drivers that are here, and still get a win, just an unbelievable win for us.”

A pair of Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified Features was run Friday night. In the feature from May 27th Rob Keller took the lead on lap 6 and held off a late charge from Kevan Cook to grab the popular win. Brandon Carvey, Chris Fleming and JJ Courcy finished third through fifth.

In the regularly scheduled 20 lap main, Kevan Cook looked to be heading to the win till a late caution spelled the difference. Chris Fleming used the top of the speedway to get around Cook for his fourth win of the season. Kevan Cook, Rob Keller, Josh Van Tassell and Rick Keller rounded out the top-five.

Jeff Isabell Sr. grabbed the lead at the halfway point from Tim Devendorf in the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite Feature. Over the last 5 laps Isabell had to hold off challenges from his son Joe Isabell for his third win in 2011. Tim Devendorf, Sterling Miller and Lowell Zehr rounded out the top-five. Josh Desantis Jr., Clayton Brewer III, Mike Mullen, Jeff Herbert and Sam Usborne completed the top-ten.

Eight for eight in feature wins for Stephen Denton in the Metalico Four-Cylinder Super Stocks as he grabbed the controversial win after contact with Chuck Powelczyk on lap 11 of the 15 lap feature. Jim Money, Keith Shay, Doug Elkins and Wendall Washington rounded out the top-five.

Over 30 Pizza Log 600 Sprint cars filled the Brewerton pits Friday night. In a wild 20 lap feature that showcased two-and three wide racing from the front to the back of the pack, Ben Kysor from Dansville, NY picked up his first ever tour win in a car he just recently purchased. Charlie Donk, Cody Shurgot, Nick Cooper and Darryl Ruggles chased Kysor across the line.
