Matt Sheppard is the Class of the Field in Winning His 2nd Modified Feature at Brewerton Speedway

By Dave Medler

BREWERTON, NY – Matt Sheppard out of Waterloo, NY Started 13th in the 27 car Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature taking the lead on lap 13 from Chad Phelps. Once in the lead Sheppard was the class of the field outdistancing Jim Davis in the 35 lap main.

It was Sheppard’s second win of the year behind the wheel of his Extreme Lubricants, No.9s, Bicknell at the “D-Shaped Dirt Demon”.

Other winners on Summit Automotive, Novelis Can Collection night were, Kevan Cook Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modifieds, Joe Isabell Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lites and Doug Elkins took his first ever win in the Metalico Four Cylinder Super Stocks.

Mike Mahaney from his outside the front row starting position grabbed the early lead in the 35 lap Tracey Road Equipment Big Block Modified feature.

With 10 laps complete, Mahaney was still setting a quick pace out front leading by a quarter of a straightaway over Chad Phelps, Jim Witko, Matt Sheppard and Jim Davis.

One lap later the racing gremlins struck Mahaney as he suddenly slowed sending him to the pits ending his strong run at the front of the pack.

On the restart Phelps would hold the narrow advantage, but only for a couple of laps. Sheppard using the extreme top of the speedway would blast around Phelps on lap 13 to take command of the race.

At the halfway point, Sheppard bolted out to a full straightaway lead over the field using the top and bottom of the speedway. Phelps, Davis, Willy Decker and Stewart Friesen showed in the top-five.

On lap 26 a quick yellow would fly erasing the huge lead Sheppard built giving the rest of the field one last shot at Sheppard for the win.

Once the green came back out Davis could hang with Sheppard for a couple laps, but Sheppard was to strong as he pulled away for 2.709 second victory at the checkers. Jim Davis, Alan Johnson, Ryan Phelps and Willy Decker rounded out the top-five.

“I can’t say enough about this track tonight. It was so smooth and so racy, there was a good top and good bottom,” Sheppard said about the track that allowed him to go from 13th to the win. “It made it tough for me to decide which the faster groove was. I moved around a lot tonight, the car just felt great everywhere it went.”

“We were able to get up through traffic pretty good on the bottom. Chad (Phelps) was really good; we were about the same speed. I really felt the bottom was faster than the top. I finally moved up to the top and was able to get around him,” Sheppard in talking about his pass for the lead and the win. “The track was just phenomenal tonight.”

In the 20 lap Nationwide Insurance IMCA Modified feature Kevan Cook turned around what looked to be a long night as he was involved in an early jingle that sent him to the rear of the field into a win. Cook worked his way forward and took the lead on lap 12 when leader Rob Keller suddenly broke ending his night. Once in the lead Cook held off Chris Fleming for his sixth Brewerton win of the year. Fleming, Brandon Carvey, Rich Keller and JJ Courcy rounded out the top-five.

In the 20 lap Beaver River Distribution ESDCA Mod Lite feature Joe Isabell grabbed the lead just past halfway and held off his Father Jeff Isabell for his first win of the season. Mike Mullen, Tim Devendorf and Jeff Isabell Jr. finished 3rd through fifth.

Doug Elkins took the lead at the drop of the green of the 15 lap Metalico Four Cylinder Super Stock feature and never looked back for his first ever feature win. Stephen Denton, Keith Shay, Chuck Powelczyk and Claude Hutchings Jr. chased Elkins across the line.
