Mayor Barlow Announces $25,000 Grant For Southern Fare Restaurant

OSWEGO – Mayor Billy Barlow announced today (March 12) a $25,000 grant for Southern Fare, a new restaurant coming to downtown Oswego.

Southern Fare will be a 60-seat, full scale bar + cookhouse.

Southern Fare is part of the Oswego Downtown Revitalization Initiative as local developer Atom Avery plans to demolish the existing Global Buffet building, replacing it with a five-story building consisting of first floor commercial space with residential space on the upper floors including a rooftop bar and terrace.

Southern Fare will be one of two occupants in the provided commercial space with plans to open in late 2019.

“I’m thrilled to bring a new restaurant to downtown Oswego and the Oswego community, offering a unique product and experience that does not currently exist in our community,” said Mayor Barlow. “I take pride in supporting talented entrepreneurs like Patrick Mitchell, whose experience and expertise will undoubtedly be an asset to our community, diversifying the options available to Oswego residents and serving as yet another new attraction in our core downtown. The $25,000 grant will assist Patrick with settling into his new restaurant with prime location and compliments the other investments happening throughout our downtown.”

Mitchell, owner and operator of Southern Fare recently re-located to Oswego from running restaurant businesses in major markets such as New Orleans, Las Vegas, New York and Boston.

Accolades include “Best Bar” designations three times issued by “Vegas Seven” and “Boston Magazine.

Mitchell thanked Mayor Barlow for the financial assistance and is excited to participate in the positive changes happening in downtown Oswego.

“I am honored by the support and confidence the city has given me as I work to open Southern Fare – Bar + Cookhouse. It has been great rejoining the community I grew up in during a time of such growth and development. I am happy the city has welcomed and supported my vision to continue Oswego’s forward momentum,” he said.

Good old “southern hospitality” will be the soul of Southern Fare.

Along with cocktails and drinks, the bar will boast an ever rotating menu full of shareables and bites making it easy to turn a drink and a snack into a full dinner.

The dining room will service both reservations and walk-in guests for drinks only or full meals.

The laid back, yet hospitable focused environment will create an experience driven following for a destination dinner, happy hour, cocktail hour or a night on the town.

The new restaurant will bring initially 10 new jobs to downtown Oswego as demolition and construction of the project is set to begin in early April and expected to be completed in late 2019.

The $25,000 in grant funding comes from the commitment of program income through the NYS Community Development Block Grant program administered and managed by the city’s Office of Economic Development.

  1. Is the new business going to be serving Cajun? THAT would be amazing. Ever since Fulton’s Locke III stopped having New Orleans style foods during and after Jazzfest… I have SO missed good quality Cajun foods. Harborfest use to have a vendor that came in their traveling food cart each summer, but they retired, I was told.

    Hint to Mr. Mitchell that a week of Cajun food would be amazing!A little Zydeco Music that week would be great, too, ;0)
