Melinda Miles to Speak at ‘Connections’

OSWEGO, NY – On October 27, Women’s Network for Entrepreneurial Training and SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations will gather women from across New York State for Connections, a day-long conference to be held at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Women employees and business owners need inspiration, ideas, information and other women to network with.

The theme for this year’s event is “Achieve – Inspire – Embrace Excellence” and will feature several dynamic speakers, networking opportunities, continental breakfast, lunch, and a dessert reception. Following lunch, our speakers will participate in a panel Q&A.

Melinda Miles, acting president of Film at Eleven and founder of Manifest, a consulting firm, will present “Faith and Tattoos ? Living on Purpose.”

At the beginning of 2010, Melinda made a resolution to fully commit herself to graduate school and broadening her horizons.

After a dozen years of singular focus on Haiti, it was easier to count the times she had failed – in work and her personal life – than to point out the successes.

But, when a massive earthquake hit Haiti on January 12, Melinda was faced with choosing between the path she had worked so hard to carve out and the country that captured her being and would never let go. It turned out that there wasn’t even a decision to make.

Despite the advice of many, she packed up her three-year old son and moved into a tent in Port-au-Prince.

How do you keep going in the face of failure? Self-doubt is powerful and can even be paralyzing.

However, being grounded in purpose can keep you moving forward no matter what obstacles you face.

Let her share with you the story of a white girl from Massachusetts who found her true place in Haiti and came to realize that sometimes passion and faith are one and the same.

Again this year, headshots will be offered by Dayger Photography, with no sitting fee.

Free hair and makeup touchups will also be available.

Also returning this year is Bee-Hive Networking, a business building activity that allows you to find exactly what you are looking for in a very short period of time.

There are no elevator speeches, no selling, and no fears or discomforts. Each attendee could walk away with an average of 12-20 cards of qualified prospects who want to meet them.

Come “catch the buzz” with Bee-Hive Networking. Please be sure to come armed with 100 business cards.

Sponsors to date include SUNY Oswego’s Office of Business and Community Relations, Women’s Network for Entrepreneurial Training, Operation Oswego County and Mitchell’s Speedway Press.

Registration and tickets for Connections are available through Operation Oswego County at
