Men’s Hockey Sends Seniors Out In Style With 5-2 Win Over Cortland

The Oswego State men’s ice hockey team celebrated Senior Night with a 5-2 victory over Cortland at the Campus Center Ice Arena on Friday. Freshman Luke Moodie (Burlington, Ont.) tallied two goals and an assist to lead the top-ranked Division III team. The Lakers, who moved to 21-1-0 overall and 13-0-0 in the SUNYAC, went 3-for-4 on the power play in the first two periods for a 4-0 lead after the second period. The Red Dragons fell to 7-15-0 on the season and 4-9-0 in the league standings.

Following after a face-off in the Cortland zone after a Red Dragon holding penalty, Laker captain Tyler Lyon (Sr., Foxboro, Ont.) wound up for a slap shot that was deflected by Paul Rodrigues (Fr., Etobicoke, Ont.). The deflection went through Brittan Kuhlman’s (Elkhorn, Neb.) five-hole for Rodrigues’ fifth goal of the season. Luke Moodie (Fr., Burlington, Ont.) was also credited with an assist.

Oswego State’s second power-play goal of the game came at 9:21 in the first period when Chris Laganiere (Jr., Owego, N.Y.) cleaned up a rebound left in the Cortland crease after a shot by Eric Selleck (So., Spencerville, Ont.). Justin Fox (Jr., Whitby, Ont.) and Selleck each received assists on the goal.

Early in the second period, Fox connected again with Selleck, who had just gotten out of the penalty box, at neutral ice. Selleck went to take a wrist shot, missed, but stuck with the play for his 18th goal of the season. The Lakers gained the skater advantage late in the stanza, which they turned into their fourth goal of the game at the 19:59.9 mark when Moodie notched his tenth goal of the year.

The shutout bid ended at 1:04 in the third period as the Red Dragons capitalized on a Laker turnover as the team was trying to clear the zone. Jake Saville (So., Bellingham, Wash.) pounced on a rebound after Oswego State goalie Kyle Gunn-Taylor (Sr., West Seneca, N.Y.) made the initial stick save with assists going to Joey Christiano (So., Rochester, N.Y.) and Dave Williams (Mississauga, Ont.).

The Lakers quickly responded when Moodie passed the puck behind his back to Jon Whitelaw (Fr., Huntsville, Ont.), but the pass was deflected into the net by a defender for a 5-1 lead at 2:37. Cortland posted its second goal of the contest while skating 4-on-3 as Chris Kaleta (Fr., Angola, N.Y.) scored after receiving a pass from Corey John (So., Albany, N.Y.).

Oswego State goaltender Kyle Gunn-Taylor finished the night with 25 saves, including 11 in both the first and third periods, and one goal allowed to move to 14-0-0 on the year. Paul Beckwith (So., Cleveland, Ohio) recorded three saves on four shots in the final 7:43. Cortland’s Brittan Kuhlman compiled 17 saves in the first two periods, while Doug Danzi (Fr., Nesconset, N.Y.) made 15 stops in the third period.
