Mexico HS National Honor Society Collects Goods For Homeless

MEXICO — The Mexico High School chapter of National Honor Society recently completed a successful supply drive by donating a table full of goods to help the homeless population in Oswego County.

The NHS chapter, called “Los Intelligentes,” ran the drive for about a month while collecting food, toiletries and clothing.

Joseph Deckman, the chapter’s advisor, noted the group championed the cause to help the community, especially those who needed the supplies to help during the harsh Central New York winter.

“These kids lobbied their teachers and fellow students to give what they could, and we were able to gather many items that will be of critical use to our local homeless population,” said Deckman. “It was their plan, and they came through wonderfully. I am proud to lead such an extraordinary group of young people.”

In addition to numerous service events, “Los Intelligentes” also works to support the local Mexico Elementary students twice per week after school.

Students help teachers complete tasks, work with students in small groups and embody the spirit of what it means to serve one’s community, Deckman said.
