FULTON – Michaud Residential Health Services now provides comprehensive and integrated infusion therapy services to those served at the rehabilitation and skilled nursing facility in Fulton.

“We are pleased to bring this service to our community,” said Michaud Administrator Mike Schafer. “Patients can now receive infusion therapy as part of our short-stay rehabilitation program. Typically, infusion therapy means that a medication is administered intravenously through a needle or catheter. It is prescribed when a patient’s condition cannot be treated effectively by oral medications.”

Conditions commonly requiring infusion therapy include infections that are unresponsive to oral antibiotics, electrolyte imbalances and more. Other conditions treated with specialty infusion therapies may include immune deficiencies, renal failure and post-surgical interventions.

Infusion therapy can be continued at home, if necessary, following discharge from Michaud’s rehabilitation program. “With this service, we are able to ensure that infusion therapy continues as needed once a patient has regained their strength and is discharged from our rehabilitation program and they return to their homes,” said Melinda Ford-Prior, Director of Nursing at Michaud. “This maintains continuity in care and often provides for a more comfortable recovery process.”

Infusion teams typically include a doctor, pharmacist, and the specialty nurses who work closely to monitor the patient’s progress and collaborate with the resident and family to provide ongoing education both at Michaud and at home.
